Thames Tideway Tunnel Ltd
Thames Tideway Tunnel Ltd is a new regulated utility company that will design, construct and finance a 25 kilometre sewer tunnel needed to prevent an average of 20 million tonnes each year of untreated sewage discharging into the tidal River Thames in London.
London’s sewerage system is no longer fit for purpose and spills millions of tonnes of sewage into the tidal section of the river every year.
This project will tackle the problem of overflows from the capital’s Victorian sewers for at least the next 100 years, and enable the UK to meet European environmental standards. It is one of the largest construction projects of its type in Europe. Tunnel construction on the project is due to start in 2016 and will involve 24 construction sites across London.
There are currently around 500 people working on the Thames Tideway Tunnel project. At the peak of construction, the project will create more than 9,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The Thames Tideway Tunnel will not only improve the environment, ecology, public health, appearance, reputation and long-term economy of London, but also give a much-needed and immediate boost to the economy by offering many thousands of skilled jobs and hundreds of apprenticeships.
